Kelly Wood - Skip Barber Shootout

Kelly Wood got her 2008 season off to an exciting start last weekend as the Huntsville teenager travelled to Sebring International Raceway and participated in the Skip Barber Karting Scholarship Shoot-out. With only two years of racing behind her in karts, it was a steep learning curve getting to grips with a formula car and an intense week-long schedule.

It began with the successful completion of a three-day Skip Barber School the week before the shootout at Sebring, the requirement to attend the following weekend. Kelly successfully completed her first challenge, a session on the Skid Pad in a Mazda Miata, which was followed by an autocross driving class in a Mazda MX5. Five sessions followed over the next two days, and switching cars for each session certainly tested Kelly's developing skills. A change in track layout for day three brought a 120MPH flat-out entry into a blind corner, a thrill that confirmed Kelly's dedication to pursuing a racing career!

By the end of her final session on track, Kelly had worked to 1.2 seconds off more experienced Canadian drivers in her best session and was very happy with her weekend's work. It was a great experience for her.
