Kelly Wood wins her first stock car race at Barrie Speedway on Saturday night in only her third start.
Stock car racing is very different than any other racing and Kelly has been testing in preparation, she has become very comfortable with the oval racing and this actually showed on Saturday night.
With two heats and a feature making up an evening race, Kelly's first heat was to start 3rd and after the chequered flag, found herself in 5th place. For the second heat she was to start at the back of the pack running clean and keeping out of trouble she managed to finish in 9th place.
Working out the points for the two heat races, Kelly was to start the feature in 6th place. With a rolling start, Kelly passed one car on the outside and another on the inside into corner one but unfortunately was hit from behind. This brought out a caution but because a full lap was not completed, the cars were formed back up into their original grid position and following the restart, found herself in 4th place after one lap passing two more cars. In the next three laps Kelly was closing in on the leaders.
The two leading cars caused another caution and were sent to the back of the field leaving Kelly at the front of a 19 car field with 10 laps to go, with a great restart, she was never challenged and went on to win by a good margin over the second place driver.
It has been a very busy 2 months for Kelly with testing, joining the NASCAR pit crew of the No.9, Mark Dilley, preparing her show car and talking to and meeting with potential sponsors. Interest with Kelly's racing is certainly growing with T.V Interviews, Newspaper articles as well as other inquiries from both the T.V and radio.
